Alice Ruhnke - The Grant Advantage

Alice Ruhnke is the founder and chief operating officer of The Grant Advantage. The Grant Advantage is a progressive, innovative consulting business devoted to advancing the mission of nonprofit organizations, faith-based organizations and educational institutions through fund development. Located in Charleston, West Virginia, this highly individualized business offers funding searches, grant coaching, revision/rewriting services, complete proposal development, and workshops.

Before launching The Grant Advantage, Alice developed, secured funding for, and led Mission West Virginia’s Wellspring Center—an initiative designed to increase the organizational capacity of faith-based and community-based organizations through training, technical assistance, financial assistance, and resources. Prior to this leadership role, she served as the Coordinator of the Relatives as Parents Program, providing support and resources to West Virginia families raising a child or children for a family member. Program development and grant writing, while not central to her positions, were her passion and she raised over $2 million in federal, state, and foundation funding for Mission West Virginia from 2002 to 2006.

From 1995 to 2002, Alice worked at West Virginia State College (now University) in Student Affairs. Her first position was the Director of Student Retention where she developed and implemented a comprehensive model for student retention, working across the campus with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and alumni. She then became the Director of Admissions and Recruitment Services, managing an office which supports nearly 5,000 students.

Alice received both her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development and Family Relations and Master of Arts degree in Education/Counseling Psychology from the University of Connecticut. She is a certified trainer in Leadership Plenty, has given hundreds of presentations during her professional career, and holds a certification in counseling from the National Board of Certified Counselors. A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Alice is married to Tim and has two sons, Michael and Luke.
